Research: Rotterdam nightlife
Based on a representative sample of visitors to the Rotterdam night, it appears that nightlife scores a meagre enough for corona. The overall rating is just over a 7 and while that in itself is underwhelming for a city like Rotterdam, the elements score adventurous, raw and innovative still a lot lower - and let those be exactly the elements that play such a big role in the city's desired (make-it-happen) identity. A whole space majority also indicated that they missed nightlife to a large extent at the time of the survey (10 months after the start of the lockdown). The social element of the night is missed the most and this mainly involves meeting people; the serendipity of the night. As a result of the enforced night lockdown, a large majority report feeling sadder, lonelier or even more dejected. Finally: there are more than enough dreams and ideas for the future. No fewer than 295 respondents (>50% of the total) took the trouble to sketch an ideal image of the Rotterdam night of the future. One of the elements that emerged prominently was the importance that respondents attach to nightlife as part of their lives.
From this research, the conclusion can be drawn that a better, more beautiful and also more Rotterdam nightlife is about more than night licences and the number of clubs. In fact, the opportunities for a better Rotterdam nightlife are there for the taking. Crucial here is the perception of nightlife by politicians and policymakers. If there is a shift in thinking, with less emphasis on nuisance and drugs and more consideration for the important role night culture plays in the well-being of a large part of the city's population and the potential of night culture for experimentation and innovation, Rotterdam's nightlife can flourish in the future like never before.
