Stadsgesprek 15.10.26 – Equalize the Ecosystem

Towards a healthy and sustainable ecosystem for musical creators in Rotterdam. 

During this public event, we focus on the financial resilience, mental health, and mutual support of local creators through two in-depth panels and a live performance by vixnde. We will examine the demand for affordable studio spaces, the availability of accessible performance venues, and the need for structural talent development programs. In two panels, moderated by Seb Harris, we will discuss how to build a more sustainable ecosystem where Rotterdam’s makers can truly thrive, by bringing together organizers, producers, DJs and researchers.

First, we will address the financial reality of being a creator. Are there sufficient opportunities and fair compensation for live gigs? Is Rotterdam’s current grant scheme adequate for independent electronic music producers and DJs? Beyond local funding, income distribution in today’s broader music landscape has become fundamentally skewed. While DJs are paid directly for their performances, the revenue generated by the tracks they play rarely reaches the original producers—or only amounts to a fraction of what they are owed. This inequality hits producers the hardest. How can we actively support these creators, and are we effectively utilizing existing rights infrastructures like BUMA/STEMRA?

Subsequently, we will evaluate the physical and professional infrastructure surrounding music makers in Rotterdam. Are there enough accessible music studios and DJ practice rooms? Are we generating enough momentum for our local creators? We will discuss whether the city should establish specific programs that not only nurture emerging artists but also elevate intermediate and advanced creators to an international stage. Should we, for example, organize dedicated Rotterdam showcases at major industry events like ADE or Abrupt in Brussels (formerly Listen Festival)?
